Take small steps toward big savings.

Did you know that small changes to your water and energy usage habits can lead to big savings on your bills? Not to mention that positive impact it has on the world’s resources.

Follow these conservation tips, and see how little changes can deliver big results.

Running FaucetTo save water:

  • Avoid using the toilet as a trash can; every toilet flush you eliminate can save between two and seven gallons of water.
  • If your toilet runs – or makes any noise except when flushed – it is leaking water and costing you money. Change the flapper in the back of the toilet tank to stop the leak.
  • Fix any dripping faucets as soon as possible.
  • Take showers instead of baths; a bath uses nearly 50 gallons of water.
  • Take shorter showers and turn off the water when lathering up.
  • Don’t let the water run when brushing your teeth or shaving; turn on the water briefly when rinsing.
  • Set your washer’s load size to the exact size of the load and try to wash only full loads. You can also save energy by using cold water.
  • When purchasing a new washer, look for one that conserves water and energy and has a suds saver attachment.
  • Be mindful of the dishes you use while cooking and let pots and pans soak before scrubbing to reduce dish washing time.
  • Shut of all water valves and turn your hot water tank temperature down to the “vacation” setting before you leave the house for an extended period of time.

Air ConditionerTo save energy:

  • Change the furnace filter four times per year to improve the performance of your heating and cooling system. It will run better and save money.
  • If you have a pet in the home, change the filter six times per year and be sure to inspect the filter frequently.
  • Turn down your thermostat in the winter or turn it up in the summer. Each degree can save you three percent on your heating bills.
  • Maintain a set temperature. Avoid adjusting the temperature up or down by more than two degrees when you leave or return to the home or office.
  • Keep fireplace dampers tightly closed during the winter until ready to light a fire. An open damper can let as much as eight percent of your heat escape out the chimney.
  • Get good windows. They can result in cost savings of as much as 15 percent a year.
  • During the summer months, use ceiling fans to circulate air through the house and keep blinds and drapes closed during hot days
